The courses within School Board U are designed with flexibility and accessibility in mind, allowing members to engage in learning at their own pace and convenience. From foundational training on board ethics to advanced strategies for building community support, the curriculum spans a broad spectrum of topics crucial for effective school governance. Courses include:

Board Training Requirements

State law and state board rules require school board members to obtain board governance training each year.  All GSBA training is approved by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE).

New Board Members

Newly elected local board of education members must complete a minimum of 15 hours of training within one year of assuming office.

New Board Member Required Training – 9 hours

Five hours of this requirement must be training provided by the Finance and Budget Office of the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE).

Local District Orientation – 3 hours

One hour dedicated to district finance.

Whole Board Governance Training –3 hours

Three hours of annual whole-board governance training, including superintendent.

Existing Board Members

Board members with one or more years of service must complete 9 hours of training per year. All School All GSBA training, including School Board U courses, is approved by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE).

Required Training - 6 hours

Six hours of training aligned with the State Board's Curriculum-Based Standards, all fully accredited by GSBA.

Whole Board Governance Training –3 hours

Three hours of annual whole-board governance training, including superintendent.

Completion Timeline

The training year runs July 1 – June 30, with all training materials due to the Georgia Department of Education (not GSBA), according to the timeline below.
