We at GSBA are excited to announce and welcome the newest member to our team, Dr. Steve Barker. Dr. Barker will lead the association’s Strategic Planning Service and Georgia’s Vision for Public Education, a research-based initiative that supports the success of public education.
Dr. Barker’s expertise in school and district leadership lends itself well to guide governance teams through the process of planning for the future. His understanding and participation in the Vision for Public Education’s research based work will strengthen and bolster the next phase that will benefit school districts all over Georgia.
Most recently, Dr. Steve Barker retired as the Superintendent of the Coweta County School System. He has served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal and principal at Coweta County elementary, middle and high schools during his 30-year career. The Coweta County Board of Education chose Dr. Steve Barker to succeed Blake Bass as Superintendent of Coweta County Schools, effective April 1, 2011.
Dr. Barker began with the school system in 1990 as teacher and coach at Evans Middle School. He was named assistant principal of Northgate High School in 1998, principal of Canongate Elementary School in 1999, and principal of Smokey Road Middle School in 2001. Dr. Barker served as principal of Newnan High School from 2003 to 2007, when he was named Director of Administrative Services for the school system, a position he held from 2007-2011.
Dr. Barker earned his B.A. in Education with an emphasis on Social Studies from Shorter College, his Master’s from the State University of West Georgia, and his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. He is a native of Dalton, Georgia, married to Karen Barker, and has two children, Cade and Lilli Glen.
